Cleaning is a chore that every home requires. Whether you have a townhouse, apartment, country house, or a vacation rental, you will need to clean your home. And what do you do as far as your pet’s safety is concerned?  You will need to find some pet-safe cleaning products to use in your home.

Spring has sprung and soon we’ll be in the summer months.  As with every home, it’s time to give a heavy duty cleaning to our pet-friendly homes. However, not every cleaning product is a pet-friendly product.

Commonly used products must be strong enough to get rid of most germs, bacteria, and viruses, and for this reason contains bleach, ammonia, isopropyl alcohol, formaldehyde, and phenols. In addition, they can be toxic for pets, children, and sometimes adults too. Pets have a sensitive sense of smell and their noses are much stronger than ours, for that reason harsh chemicals are more dangerous for them.

Ammonia, for example, kills bacteria and viruses, but in higher concentrations is harmful for both animals and humans. It causes skin irritation, burns, respiratory and neurological issues. Drain and oven cleaners are very caustic and can lead to serious damage to the skin, eyes, and mucous membranes. Carpet and counter cleansers can be as dangerous as others for animals and children too.

So, which cleaning products are safe for pets?

Your pet’s respiratory rate is much faster than humans.  For this reason, they may suffer more toxic exposure to chemicals.

Chemical cleaning products can put pets at risk for liver and kidney damage, respiratory diseases, gastrointestinal diseases, anemia, and cancer. According to Pet Health Network, there are homemade or to buy cleaning products that will keep our pets safe, while effectively cleaning the space we live in and call home. These products are non-chemical, non-toxic cleaning products. They are natural or eco-friendly and children safe too.
